Conclusion
Dennis Nilsen was arrested in January of 1983 on suspicion of multiple murders.The police began to investigate Nilsen's flat. When they entered his apartment, they noticed the awful smell of decomposiing flesh. They then found three heads in the cupboard, and also found 13 other bodies in Nilsen's previous apartment.
When Nilsen was tried on October 24, 1983, he was convicted of 6 murders and 2 attempted murders. He was sentenced to life on November 4, 1983. The original sentencing was 25 years, but the Home Secretary set a life tariff, which ensured that Dennis would never be let go from prison. Dennis wrote over 50 journals which included what he called "sad sketches" which described the treatment he showed toward his victims. These journals were later used to help the prosecution on Nilsen. On the eve of his trial, he wrote "I have judged myself more harshly than any court ever could." |
